Since his accession to the throne of his glorious ancestors, His Majesty the
King Mohammed VI expressed concern Over the condition of women in
Morocco and for establishing equality between women and men. Actually, in a
speech on August 20, 1999, he stated the problem in the following terms: "How
can we hope to attain progress and prosperity when women, who constitute

men in a consistent way with their noble mission, and which protect them

achievements which place them on an equal footing with men, whether in

This important speech was the first step in a reappraisal of the condition of
Moroccan women, for His Majesty - may God lengthen his days made a
