TEXT 1
do Laser 15 an acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. Stimulated emission is a
variation of spontancous emission, a process that occurs in atoms when an electron in a ground, or unexcited
state, is knocked into a higher state when energy is applied to the system. As the electron drops back into ground
state, a photon, or particle of light is released. As de-excitation occurs in millions of atoms, photons are released
in a random fashion and light is emittcd in every direction. An optical cavity, the space formed by two réflective
surfaces facing each other, is used to control the direction of the beam. There are solid-state, gas, and liquid
lesers, and by subjecting lasing materials to various types of energy - electrical, magnetic, or sonic- scientists
have been able to control the laser output to suit varions functions and epplications.
In industry, ‏عط‎ laser has proven to be a very versatile tool, particularly for cutting and welding, Lasers are now
also used in high-speed printing and in the creation of three-dimensional images, called holograms. Laser
tracking and ranging systems have been developed, using light signals to measure distance rather than the radio
signals of radar. The use of the laser in biological and medical applications is also rapidly expanding, and the
laser is already being used with great success in certain surgical procedures. In the field of communications the
laser, used in conjunction with fibre optic networks, is capable of carrying much more information than
conveñtional wires and is setting the stage for the ‘electronic superhighway" of the near future.

TEXT 2
One theory that integrates diverse findings on hunger, eating, and weight argues that body weight is soverned by
a set-point, a homeostatic mechanism that keeps people at roughly the weight they are genetically designed to be.
Set point theorists claim that everyone has a genctically programmed basal metabolisin rate, the rate at which the
body burns calories for energy, and a fixed number of fat cells, which are cells that store fat for energy. These
cells may change in size (the amount of fat they contain), but never in number. After weight loss, they just Jurk
around the body, waiting for the chance to puff up again. According to set-point theory, there is no single area in
the brain that keeps track of weight. Räther, an interaction of metabolism, fat cells, and hormones keeps people
at the weight their bodies are designed to be. When a heavy person diets, the body slows down to conserve
energy (and its fat reserves), When a thin person overeats, the body speeds up to burn enerey.
32. The passage would most likely be found in a texthook on which of the following subjects?

Topic 1 — Advertising aimed at children is misleading and unfair

I agree that targeting children with advertisements is largely unethical. Unlike adults, young children cannot clearly separate a cartoon from the commercial that interrupts it, and they do not understand that the advert is designed to make them want something.

Firstly, much of this advertising promotes unhealthy products. Sweets, sugary drinks and fast food are presented with colourful characters and free toys, which encourages bad eating habits at an age when they are formed for life.

Secondly, advertisers use children to put pressure on their parents. A child who has seen the same toy advertised ten times will keep asking for it, and parents with limited budgets feel guilty if they refuse. This is unfair to families.

Finally, the problem is growing online. On video platforms and in mobile games, adverts are often hidden inside the content itself, so even older children may not notice that they are being sold something.

Of course, some campaigns aimed at children are positive, for example those about road safety or brushing teeth. However, commercial advertising for children should be strictly regulated, and schools should teach media literacy so that children learn to recognise persuasion. Protecting young consumers is a responsibility that companies should not ignore.

Topic 2 — What causes people to emigrate?

  • Facteurs environnementaux : sécheresse, catastrophes naturelles, changement climatique.
