TEXT 1 —
Jupiter is the largest and most massive planet and is fifth in order of distance from the sun. It is well placed for .
observation for several months in every year and on average is the brightest of the planets apart from Venus,
though for relatively brief periods Mars may outshine it. Jupiter’s less than 10-hour rotation period gives it the
shortest day in the solar system insofar as the principal planets are concerned. There are no true seasons on
Jupiter because the axial indliination to the perpendicular of the orbital plane is only just over 3°-less than that
for any other planet.
The most famous mark on Jupiter is the Great Red Spot. lt has shown variations in both intensity and colour, and
at times it has been invisible, but it always returns after a few years. At its greatest extent it may be 40,000
kilometres long and 14,000 kilometres wide, so its surface area is greater than that of Earth. Though the latitude
of the red spot varies little, it drifts about the longitude. Over the past century, the total longitudinal drift has
announced to approximately 1200°. The latitude is generally very close to -22°, ft was once thought that the Red
Spot might be a solid or semnisolid body floating in Jupiter’s outer gas. However, the Pioneer and Voyager results
have refuted that idea and proven the Red Spot to be a phenomenon of Jovian meteorology. Its longevity may
well be due to its exceptional size, but there are signs that it is decreasing in size and may not be permanent.
Several smaller red spots have been seen occasionally but have not lasted. 5
L The main purpose of the passage is:
A) To explain why the Great Red Spot changes
B) To show which of the planets shines the brightest
C) Togive an introduction to Jupiter and its Red Spot

A) its rotation period is shorter than 10 hours
B) the axial inclination is-only just over 3°

TEXT 2:
700375 cars are smaller, safer, cleaner, and more economical than their predecessors, but the car of the future
will be far more pollution-free than those on the road today. Several new types of automobile engines have
already been developed that run on alternative sources of power, such as electricity, compressed natural gas,
methanol, steam, hydrogen, and propane. Electricity, however, is the only zero-emission option presently
available.
Although electric vehicles will not be truly practical until a powerful, compact battery or other dependable source
of current is available, transportation experts foresee a new assortment of electric vehicles entering everyday
life: shorter-range commuter electric cars, three-wheeled neighborhood cars, electric delivery vans, bikes and
trolleys.
As automakers work to develop practical electrical vehicles, urban planners and utility engineers are focusing on
infrastructure systems to support and make the best use ofthe new cars. Public parking spots on the street or in
commercial lots will need to be equipped with devices that allow drivers to change their batteries while they
shop, dine, or attend a concert. To encourage the use of electric vehicles, the most convenient parking in
transportation centers might be reserved for electric cars.
Planners foresee electric shuttle buses , trains, buses, and neighborhood vehicles all meeting at transit centers
that would have facilities for charging and renting. Commuters will be able to rent a variety of electric cars to
suit their needs: light trucks, one person three-wheelers, small cars, or electric/gasoline hybrid cars for longer
trips, which will no doubt take place on automated freeways capable of handling five times the number of
vehicles that can be carried by a freeway today.
9. The following electrical vehicles are all mentioned in the passage EXCEPT
A) vans B) trains C) planes D) trolleys
10. The authors purpose in the passage is to
A) criticize conventional vehicles C) narrate a story about alternative energy vehicles
B) support the invention of electric cars D) describe the possibilities for transportation in the future
11. The passage would most likely be followed by details about
A) automated freeways © the neighborhood of the future
B) pollution restrictions in the future’ D) electric shuttle buses
12. The word ‘compact’ in line 6 is closest in meaning to
A) long-range B) inexpensive C) concentrated D) square
13. In the second paragraph, the author implies that
A) a dependable source of electric energy will eventually be developed
B) everyday life will stay much the same in the future
C) a single electric vehicle will eventually replace several modes of transportation
D) electric vehicles are not practical for the future
14, According to the passage, public parking lots of the future will be
A) more convenient than they are today C) much larger than they are today
B) equipped with charging devices D) as common as today/s gas stations

Reading comprehension — Text 1 (Jupiter)

  1. C — To give an introduction to Jupiter and its Red Spot : le texte présente la planète puis sa Grande Tache rouge, sans thèse à démontrer.
  3. D — Neutral : ton descriptif et informatif, aucun jugement ni enthousiasme.
  4. B — from time to time : « for relatively brief periods Mars may outshine it ».
  6. B — will one day vanish : « it is decreasing in size and may not be permanent ».
  7. C — brilliance : « variations in both intensity and colour » = variations d'éclat.

Reading comprehension — Text 2 (the car of the future)

  2. D — describe the possibilities for transportation in the future : le texte décrit, il ne critique ni ne raconte.
  6. B — equipped with charging devices : « will need to be equipped with devices that allow drivers to change their batteries ».

25D factoriesmass-produced in factories.
26A rangerange from … to … = aller de … à ….
27C departmentdepartment stores, organisés par étages et rayons (« each floor has a section »).
35A delivereddelivered to your doorstep = livré à domicile.

Grammar & structure — phrases (36–48)

  1. C — the cleverest of the three : superlatif en -est d'un adjectif court ; « most cleverest » est un double superlatif.
  2. B — cheaper, but not as good : comparatif court en -er et comparaison d'égalité négative not as … as.
  3. B — much later than : much renforce un comparatif ; « more later » est fautif.
  4. A — far more diligently than : adverbe long → more + adverbe, renforcé par far.
  5. D — that far et so far sont tous deux corrects (« aussi loin »).
  6. D — as good a swimmer as : structure as + adjectif + a + nom + as.
  7. A — too small a car : too + adjectif + a + nom.
  9. C — Living language = langue vivante.
  10. A — much farther away : comparatif de far (distance) renforcé par much.
  11. Réponse probable : aucune option n'est grammaticale. La forme correcte est so many spelling mistakes (mistakes est dénombrable → many ; so devant un quantifieur). « such many » et « so much » sont fautifs ; l'énoncé contient vraisemblablement une coquille.
  12. B — So is my daughter : reprise avec l'auxiliaire de la phrase (are → is), sujet singulier.
  13. B — twice as much as it was worth : multiplicateur + as much as.

Vocabulary (49–60)

  1. A — cause offence = offenser (collocation).
  2. C — without blinking = sans cligner des yeux.
  3. B — good manners = bonnes manières.
  4. D — the meeting was held = la réunion s'est tenue.
  6. D — has just been appointed = vient d'être nommé.
  7. B — suppliers = fournisseurs, partenaires de long terme.
  8. B — sorted out = réglé (verbe à particule).
  9. C — sales forecast = prévisions de ventes (« for the next few months »).
  10. B — push a deal through = faire aboutir un accord.
  11. C — information est indénombrable : jamais « informations ».

Topic 1 — « Bad leadership plus bad management are the most widespread reasons for a business to go bankrupt »

Useful phrases: “To a large extent, I agree that…”, “A case in point is…”, “Admittedly, external shocks…; however…”, “All in all…”.

Topic 2 — « Getting a degree in a college never guarantees one's success in life »
