25 A low-work society is only a dystopia if the social system is geared to distributing rewards via work. In the early
26 19th century, the Utopian Socialists tried not only to imagine an alternative but to implement it, in slightly crazy closed
27 communities inspired by the writings of philosopher Charles Fourier.
28 Fourier famously predicted work could become play - its qualities could absorb the qualities of aimlessness, humor,
29 even eroticism. We would flit from one kind of work to another, oblivious of its productive function.
30 Marxism was founded on the rejection of this idea: anti-utopian socialism became focused on reducing work to a
31 minimum while maximizing free time.
32 Today, with all the scared communities based on work challenged by the possibility of its disappearance, the best
33 you can say about the play versus work debate is: it’s complicated. Many of us work through a single handheld device
34 which, on top of our contacts, emails, screenplays and so on contains much of our externalized self.
35 | We can already see the self fragmenting; becoming “multichannel”, as networked communications eat into spaces
36 like the dinner table, the shared bed, the otherwise hierarchical office.
37 The biggest mystery of the post-work society is what happens to the self when it cannot define itself against
38 corporate identity, skill set or seniority. [...].

Support : un article de Paul Mason (The Guardian) intitulé Automation may mean a post-work society but we shouldn't be afraid.

Section One — Reading comprehension and commentary

Task One

a) “At the high skill end of the workforce we increasingly work to targets, not time.”
Model answer: Highly qualified employees are no longer judged on the number of hours they spend at work but on the results they achieve. They organise their own time freely, sometimes switching between work and leisure, as long as they reach the objectives set for them. Work is thus becoming separated from fixed working hours.

b) What does “that” (line 18) refer to?
Model answer: “That” refers to the idea in the previous lines: a basic income being used as a one-off subsidy to speed up the automation of the economy, in other words the rapid automation of the economy made possible by a universal basic income.

Task Two — Comment on the title (50 words maximum, with a title and a word count)

Model paragraph:
A future to shape, not to fear
Automation is not something to fear, as the writer argues, but only if society adapts. Machines can free people from repetitive tasks, yet without a basic income and shorter working hours, they could also bring unemployment and inequality. The real challenge is political, not technological. [45 words, title excluded]

Section Two — Translation and writing

Task Two — Persuasive essay

Statement (Lindsey German): “It is a fact that no social human sustainable development could be achieved without women's liberation from social constraints.”

  1. Introduction : définir le développement humain durable (santé, éducation, revenu, pour les générations présentes et futures) et les « contraintes sociales » (mariage précoce, accès limité à l'éducation et à l'emploi, charge du travail domestique, stéréotypes) ; thèse : women's liberation is a precondition of sustainable development.

Model opening: No country can run fast on one leg. As long as half of the population is held back by early marriage, limited schooling or the burden of unpaid domestic work, development will remain unbalanced and fragile. This essay argues that freeing women from social constraints is not a side issue but the very condition of sustainable human development.
