A fundamental difference between the North and the South is what constitutes the
2 primary threat to the environment. Without wishing to over-simplify the matter, the threats are
31 more-or-less opposite. In the North, the threats are over-development, over-exploitation, and
4 rampant consumerism - essentially the consequences of wealth and unsustainable lifestyles. In
5 the South, the threat is poverty fuelled by population pressure and exacerbated by under-
6 development and a host of other factors such as trade barriers and political instability.
7 There is a range of factors, some natural and some of human origin, which have
8 contributed to poverty in Africa over the years in an accumulative way and which have led to an
9 increasing environmental crisis. This has resulted in a cycle where environmental degradation
10 and poverty have fed on each other year by year, over decades, resulting in untold sufferings.
11) One of these factors is natural climate change which is far important in the South than in the
12 North the seasonal variations and the variations from year ٠م year. For the poor (his represents
13 a continuous and critical risk, in the light of which subsistence agriculture should be regarded as
14 a wise and inevitable survival strategy. Climate variability coupled with population pressure have
15 resulted in extensive degradation of the environment. Most of African people have very limited
16 abilities to عورف with climate variations - what suffers is the environment, and of course the
17 people, who are becoming easy preys to poverty. À nother factor is shortage in water.
18 No matter who we are, where we are, and what we do, we are all dependent on water. We
19 need it every day, in so many ways. We need it to stay healthy; we need it for growing food, for
20 transportation, irrigation and industry. We need it for animals and plants, for changing colours
21 and seasons. However, despite the importance of water resources in our lives and well-being, we
2 are increasingly disrespectful of them. We abuse them. We waste them. We pollute them,
23 forgetting how essential they are to our very survival. Once there is drought, we just do not know
to what saint to pray.
25 If the primary threat to the environment in the South is poverty, the primary activity
26 required to protect the environment and ensure the maintenance of habitat and diversity is
27 judicious and sustainable* development which must include water storage and the provision of
28 alternative fuel sources to wood fuels, together with the use of new technologies --be it in
29 agriculture, water storage or else Development should not turn a deaf ear to all that can cause
30 damage to the environment. It should encourage technologies, which have a positive bearing on
31 ecosystems; biotechnology introduced in agriculture sets an example in such a domain. Efforts
32 made in the field of renewable energies are not to be disregarded.
33 Nonetheless, what is appropriate in the North struggle may not be appropriate in the
34 South, even if the ultimate objective is the same. However, what both the North and the South |
35 ought to preserve is the gist of life: WATER, the primary mainstay of whatever development
36 scheme. |
37 We, humans, ought to focus our attention on protecting and respecting our water
38 resources, as individuals, communities, countries, and as a global family of concerned citizens.
39 We ought to mend our ways by protecting our freshwater, and, hence, help ensure our future and
40 our planet's long-term prospects.
41 What may seem absurd is that a single jumbo jet crash makes the world's headlines.
«2 However, each day the death toll from drinking dirty water is equivalent to 20 jet crashes.
43 Lhe victims are poor and they live in shantytowns and remote villages of the developing
44 world They are dying from easily preventable water-borne diseases. 2.4 billion people have no
45 access ٠م safe sanitation. Six thousand children will be killed today by diseases, which are easily
46 preventable. Most at risk are those living in urban squatters, i.e. the slums.

Section One — Multiple-Choice Questionnaire
- c. are — après unless (= if not), présent simple pour un futur ; are not ferait une double négation.
- c. would it be — question au conditionnel avec if I were to… (hypothèse) : inversion auxiliaire–sujet.
- c. start — parallélisme avec were to throw away … and (to) start collecting : le to n'est pas répété.
- b. no longer — honesty no longer pays ; any longer exige une négation (does not pay any longer).
- b. which — relative non déterminative (entre virgules) se rapportant à une chose (la devise) : which, jamais that.
- d. began — It is high time + sujet + prétérit.
- c. to relive — be doomed to + base verbale (« condamnés à le revivre »).
- c. too hard to satisfy — is est déjà dans la phrase ; too + adjectif + to + verbe.
- b. has led — so far appelle le present perfect.
- b. we are going — interrogative indirecte après I wonder when : ordre sujet–verbe, sans inversion.
- d. No matter what — « quoi que fassent certaines entreprises » ; despite se construit avec un nom.
- c. nothing — reduced to nothing (« réduits à rien »).
- d. in carrying — succeed in + V-ing.
- c. had not attended — conditionnel mixte : condition passée (plus-que-parfait), conséquence présente (would not be taking now).
- d. the first ten — en anglais le nombre suit first : the first ten.
- b. most of — most of + the + nom ; most the constitutions est agrammatical.
- b. themselves — pronom d'insistance de they.
- b. nor do you — reprise d'une phrase négative (do not agree) : nor/neither do you.
- b. had — You had better + base verbale (« vous feriez mieux de »).

Section Two — Reading Comprehension
Task One — References
- a. this (line 12) : natural climate change, i.e. the seasonal and year-to-year variations of the climate.
- b. The victims (line 43) : the people who die from drinking dirty water (water-borne diseases).
Task Two — Perils (note form)
| North | South |
|---|---|
| over-development; over-exploitation; rampant consumerism; unsustainable lifestyles (wealth) | poverty; population pressure; under-development; trade barriers / political instability; climate variability; water shortage |
Task Three — Supported or contradicted?
- Contradicted (lines 2-6).
- Supported (lines 7-8 and 11-17) : climate change is one of the factors that have contributed to poverty in Africa; people become easy preys to poverty.
Task Four — Completion (in your own words)
- Both Man and Nature have suffered from environmental degradation and poverty, so far.
- If we were caring much about water, we would not waste and pollute it.
- Not only should we protect our freshwater but we should mend our ways, as well.
- If nothing is done to provide safe water and sanitation, diseases will kill more and more people in the coming years.
Task Five — Commentary
1. Role of water and the climate in the South (at least 50 words) — modèle de 61 mots :
In the South, water and climate decide whether people can live at all. Most families depend on rain-fed subsistence farming, so a dry year means a poor harvest, hunger and debt. Shortage of clean water also spreads diseases, especially among children in slums and remote villages. Combined with population pressure, these factors degrade the environment and keep people trapped in poverty.
2. Why are water, the environment, technology and sustainable development so important? (more than two paragraphs, more than 100 words) — modèle :
These issues make the headlines because they concern the survival of all of us. Water is the basis of life, health, food and industry, yet it is limited, wasted and polluted. Climate change and environmental degradation already cause droughts, floods and migrations, and the poorest countries suffer first.
Technology and sustainable development offer the way out. Renewable energies, drip irrigation, desalination and water recycling can meet our needs without destroying the resources of future generations. Morocco, for example, invests in solar power and in dams to secure energy and water.
In my opinion, these topics are vital because they link the economy, health and peace. A world that ignores them prepares conflicts over water and new waves of poverty; a world that takes them seriously can grow while protecting the planet.
Section Three — Version (traduction proposée)
