2 Read the following article and answer the questions below:
5 Culture's role in environmental change
: The live and digital work of the cultural and creative industries is key to a low carbon transition and future,
says Hannah Rudman
1 A huge body of science has built up over the last 50 years to prove that climate change is anthropogenic:
2 human-made, The balance of nature is being significantly affected by the amount of carbon dioxide
3 (CO2) humans and their industry have pumped into the atmosphere, and we have simultaneously
4 chopped down the planet's capacity to absorb the excess CO2.
5 We've also exploited to peak points, without properly paying for, the earth's natural but finite resources.
6 The increase in global temperatures these actions have created affect the balance of nature, causing
7 effects we are all too familiar with.
8 But what have the cultural and creative industries got to do with this predicament? Just because we are
9 notseen as a significant part of the emissions/pollutant emitting and natural resource using problem, it
10 does not mean we shouldn't be a key player in the solution.
11 We face daunting challenges that will affect us domestically as well as globally. Climate change is not
12 just about the climate — it will have huge knock-on effects on human rights, economies, democracy,
13 equality and social and civil justice landscapes. 0 à À =
14 The cultural and creative industries already make work that reflects implicitly and explicitly on these
15 issues listed above. We already stir the imaginations, minds, emotions, spirits and souls of audiences
16 onthese subjects. So why is environmental sustainability the topic so often missing from the list? The
17 window for averting climate change is narrow. If we want to choose our own path, not have one
18 forced upon us, we need to take responsibility and act now. We must have the courage to programme
19 much more work about environmental issues. ne.
- 7 20 And if we're programming about it, and forming a position on it, we must also seek to have integrity
‘ 21 with that in how our organisations and practices operate. |
22 The national digital development programme AmbITion Scotland (designed and project managed
23 byRudman Consulting and Culture Sparks) seeks to support organisations hoping to make
24 environmentally sustainable operationa! changes - from products to audience engagement - using
25 digitaltools.
26 The Touring Network have used the support of AmbITion Scotland to create Tourbook, an online social
27 network for promoters and touring companies focusing on bringing work to remote geographical areas.
28 It encourages a change in behaviour, away from more analogue forms of social networking: meetings!
29 Digitising some of the work done in these meetings cuts back the carbon footprints of the promoters as
30 they avoid travel to do business, but it also makes immediately public when artists are in Scotland.
31 We need to provide more ways, like those listed above, of encouraging personal engagement with the
32 newactions around sustainability and the environment, The many ways in which the arts, cultural and
33 creative industries can enable each individual to change their own actions, develop their own learning
34 and expand their creative imagination, is incredibly important for achieving the kind of changes a low
35 carbon transition and future demand.
36 As a sector we are a powerful collective imagination and a trusted voice — we must tell stories of hope
37 and warning about what the future holds. Our disruptive, audacious thinking can get people engaged.
38 Our stories about ecological sustainability and greener living will be essential to preparing us all for a
39 new ecosystem. Statistics cannot motivate us in the same way stories can.

Support : l'article Culture's role in environmental change (Hannah Rudman, The Guardian, 15 juillet 2013).

Section One — Reading comprehension & version

Task One: What is the main idea of the article? (in your own words)

Model answer: The writer argues that, although the arts and creative sector is not a major polluter, it has a key part to play in fighting man-made climate change. It should put environmental issues at the heart of its work, make its own organisations greener, for instance by using digital tools instead of travelling, and use the power of storytelling to change people's behaviour, because stories inspire action far more than figures do.

Task Two: Version — the paragraph in italics (lines 14–19)

Section Two — Essay writing (four-paragraph persuasive essay)

Statement: “People should try to change their behaviours and attitudes towards the environment in order to ensure sustainable development.”

Model opening: Climate change is no longer a distant threat; it is the result of the way we produce, travel and consume. Governments and companies certainly have a major role to play, but sustainable development will remain a slogan unless each of us changes daily habits and attitudes towards nature. This essay argues that individual change is both necessary and powerful.
