1. Recently,

ee se Was artificial intelligence and how schools would need to adapt to prepare

8 Cogent essays, solving science and math problems and producing working computer code.
ms 5 nee but it has already sent many éducators into a panic. Students are using it to
85 0 25518011055, passing off A.l.-generated essays and problem sets as their own. Teachers
0 00 administrators have been Scrambling to catch students using the tool to cheat, and they
Fe: etting about the havoc ChatGPT could wreak on their lesson plans. Some publications have
care perhaps a bit Prematurely, that ChatGPT has killed homework altogether. Cheating is,
Foyers the immediate Practical fear, along with the bots propensity to spit out wrong or
misleading answers. But there are existential worries, too. One high school teacher told me that he
1588 ChatGPT to evaluate ‏د‎ few of his students’ papers and that the app had provided more
016121160 2010 useful feedback on them than he would have, in a tiny fraction ofthe time. “Am ] even
necessary now?" he asked me, only halfjoking.
3. Some schools have responded to ChatGPT by cracking down. New York City public schools, for
example, recently blocked ChatGPT access on school computers and networks, citing “concerns
about negative impacts on student learning, and concerns regarding the safety and accuracy of
content." Schools in other cities, including Seattle, have also restricted access. Tim Robinson, à
spokesman for Seattle Public Schools, told me that ChatGPT was blocked on school devices in
December, ‘along with five other cheating tools." It's easy to understand why ‘educators feel |
threatened. ChatGPT is a freakishly capable tool that landed in their midst with no warning, and it
performs reasonably well across a wide variety of tasks and academic subjects. There are
legitimate questions about the ethics of Al.-generated writing, and concerns about whether the
answers ChatGPT gives are accurate -often, they are not. And 1710 sympathetic to teachers who feel |
that they have enough to worry about, without adding AL.-generated homework to the mix. But
after talking with dozens of educators over the past few weeks, l’ve come around to the view that
banning ChatGPT from the classroom is the wrong move.
4. The first reason not to ban ChatGPT in schools is that, to be blunt, it is not going to work. A
| school can blockthe ChatGPT website on school networks and school-owned devices. But students
| | - have phones, laptops and any number of other ways of accessing it outside of class, (Just for kicks,
0 Task d'ChatGPT how a student ‏قو مط‎ intent on using the app might evade a schoolwide ban. It
WIR came up with five answers, all totally plausible, including using a VPN to disguise the student's
web traffic) Some teachers have high hopes for tools such as GPTZero, a program built by a
Pri inceton stud nt that claims to be able to detect A..-generated writing. But these tools are not
relia Fes and itis relatively easy to fool them by changing a few words, or using a different
AL program to paraphrase certain passages. Al. chatbots could be programmed to watermark
heir outputs in | some way so teachers would have aneasier time spotting A.l.-generated text. But
‏,كا‎ too, is à flimsy € lefense. Right now, ChatGPT is the only free, easy-to-use chatbot ofits caliber.

‎But there will be others, and students will soon be able to take their pick, probably including ee‏
‎with no A. fingerprints. Instead of starting an endless game against an ever-expanding 0‏
‎chatbots, here is a suggestion: For the rest of the academic year, schools should treat Chat‏ .لط
‎the way they treat calculators — allowing it for some assignments, but not others, and Se‏
‎that unless students are being supervised in person with their devices stashed away, they re‏
‎probably using one. Then, over the summer, teachers can modify their lesson plans — replacing‏
‎take-home exams with in-class tests or group discussions, for example — to try to keep cheaters at‏
‎bay.‏
‎The second reason not to ban ChatGPT from the classroom is that, with the right approach, it‏ .5
‎can be an effective teaching tool. Cherie Shields, a high school English teacher in Oregon, told me‏
‎that she had recently assigned students in one of her classes to use ChatGPT to create outlines for‏
‎their essays comparing and contrasting two 19% century short stories that touch on themes of‏
‎gender and mental health: “The Story of an Hour,’ by Kate Chopin, and “The Yellow Wallpaper,” by‏
‎Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Once the outlines were generated, her students put their laptops away‏
‎and wrote their essays longhand. The process, she saïd, had not only deepened students‏
‎models, and how‏ .ام ‎understanding of the stories. It had also taught them about interacting with‏
‎to coax a helpful response out of one.‏
‎“They have to understand, ‘1 need this to produce an outline about X, Y and Z,' and they have to‏ .6
‎think very carefully about it," Ms. Shields said. “And if they don't get the result that they want, they‏
‎can always revise it" Creating outlines is just one of the many ways that ChatGPT could be used in‏
‎class. It could write personalized lesson plans for each student; for example, “explain Newton's‏
‎laws of motion to a visual-spatial learner” and generate ideas for classroom activities like “writing‏
‎a script for a ‘Friends’ episode that takes place at the Constitutional Convention”. It could be used‏
‎as a starting point for in-class exercises, or a tool for English language learners to improve their‏
‎basic writing, skills. In this direction, the teaching blog ‘Ditch That Textbook’ has a long list of‏
‎possible classroom uses for ChatGPT.‏
‎Even ChatGPT's flaws — such as the fact that its answers to factual questions are often wrong —‏ .7
‎can become fodder for a critical thinking exercise. Several teachers told me that they had‏
‎instructed students to try to make ChatGPT slip up, or evaluate its responses the way a teacher‏
‎would'evaluate a students. ChatGPT can also help teachers save time preparing for class. Jon Gold,‏
‎an eighth-grade history teacher said that he had experimented with using ChatGPT to generate‏
‎M quizzes. He fed the bot an article about Ukraine, for example, and asked it to generate 10 multiple-‏
‎choice questions that could be used to test students’ understanding of the article. Of those 10‏ |
‎questions, he saïd, six were usable, Ultimately, Mr. Gold said, ChatGPT wasn’t a threat to student‏
‎learning as long as teachers paired it with substantive, in-class discussions. “Any tool that lets‏ |
‎students re 1 e their thinking before they come to class, and practice their ideas, is only going to‏
‎make our discussions richer,” he said.‏
‎In conclusion, the emerge nce of ChatGPT has raised significant concerns among educators and‏ .8
‎school adn ninistrators, part cu y in regard to academie integrity and the impact on traditional‏
‎eaching r un ChatGPT from the classroom is not a practical or effective‏

1. The Olympic games are old—the first modern edition Was held in Athens in 1896—and 50 are
the fans. The median age of American viewers of the games in Barcelona in 1992 was 39. That
increased to 53 for the Rio de Janeiro games of 2016. Overall viewing figures are sinking, too. At
the most recent games in Tokyo in 2021, delayed from 2020, they were a third lower than in 2008.
2. Thomas Bach, the president of the International Olympic Committee (10C), has acknowledged
that the games risk losing relevance: “We have to keep connected” with society, he said in 2020. To
do 50, the Olympics are expanding, adding what Mr Bach described as “youth-based” sports. In |
Tokyo, climbing, skateboarding and surfing were put on the schedule. In Paris next year,
breakdancing will feature for the first time. Undoubtedly the youth ‏عط الزن‎ thrilled. But if Mr Bach
wants the Olympics to become more relevant to more people, the best idea would be to include e-
sports, Or competitive video games:
3. E-sports command a huge audience. By 2025, around 320m fans are expected to be watching at
least once a month, reckons Newzoo, a data firm. In 2021 peak viewership for the World
Championship final of League of Legends, a fantasy strategy game, Was nearly 74m people, |
according to Riot Games, the game’s publishers: The peak figure for the Super Bowl, the highlight |
of the American football year, Was 115m. So far, the 106 has approached e-sports like an uncool |
dad. An inaugural Olympic E-sports Week took place in Singapore in June. But the choice ofevents
puzzled fans. The archery game, for instance, had been downloaded only 100 times before the L
tournament Was announced. The most recognisable event, “Just Dance”, a motion-sensing dance
simulator, is not considered an e-sport by aficionados. The experiment resulted in widespread
mockery and multiple memes. Few people took the competition seriously. Peak viewership was
barely more than 22,000.
4. The IOC should take its cue from the four-yearly Asian Games, which start in the Chinese city of
Hangzhou on September 23rd. With 12,400 athletes, the competition will have more participants
than the Tokyo Olympics: jt will also be the first event of its size to feature e-sports. In addition to
athletes participating in traditional sports, gamers from across Asia will compete in seven events,
including hugely popular games such as FIFA Online 4, à football game, and League of Legends,
which has more than 180m players: Organisers of the next Asian Games, in japan, have confirmed
they will also award medals for e-sports. Capturing 3 big audience matters for events like the
Olympics, which have seen the costs of infrastructure and security balloon in recent years: The
inclusion of e-sports would boost revenues from media rights and sponsorship. The industry Was
valued at $1.4bn last year, 4 figure that is expected to triple by 2030, according to Cognitive
Market Research, a consulting firm.
5. Yet, the 106 remains hesitant about embracing the gaming world, It has claimed that
mainstream video games do not align with Olympic values. One reason is the perceived association
of e-sports with violence. Mr Bach has said that for the Olympics there is “an absolute taboo”
regarding "killer games", such 5 League of Legends. The Olympics may well encompass shooting,
fencing and boxing, but according to Mr Bach these are a “civilised expression” of real fighting,
| unlike blasting a bunch of pixels on a screen: There is, however, little evidence to suggest that
violenc ‏ع:‎ ine-Sports spills over into real life.

التصحيح المقترح

هذا تصحيح مقترح من إعداد فريق wadifa-info لمساعدتك على فهم منهجية الإجابة — وليس تصحيحاً رسمياً صادراً عن الإدارة المنظِّمة. أسئلة هذا الامتحان محررة بالفرنسية، لذلك التصحيح محرر بالفرنسية أيضاً.

This paper is the specialty-subject test (English) of the entrance exam to the Regional Centres for Education and Training Professions (CRMEF) for the recruitment of secondary-school teachers, 2nd grade — Ministry of National Education, 2023 session. It is a multiple-choice paper in three parts: Critical reading (two texts, Q1–Q20), Language (Q21–Q80) and Writing (Q81–Q96). The scan covers pages 2 to 25 of 26; the cover page (duration, coefficient, instructions) and the last page are not included. Below is a proposed key with a one-line justification for each answer.

💡 Method: in reading questions, go back to the paragraph every time: the right option is the one the text states or clearly implies, not the one that sounds most plausible. In grammar items, check agreement and tense sequence first; in function items (complaining, thanking, refusing politely), match the register asked for in bold.

Critical reading — Text 1 (ChatGPT in schools, © The New York Times, 2023)

  • Q1 — B (the impact of A.I. on education). Paragraph 1: "The topic was artificial intelligence and how schools would need to adapt". ChatGPT (C) is what the audience cared about, not the topic of the talk.
  • Q2 — C (accuracy of ChatGPT's answers). Paragraphs 2–3 mention its "propensity to spit out wrong or misleading answers" and doubts "whether the answers ChatGPT gives are accurate".
  • Q3 — D ("ChatGPT can be a teacher's best friend"). It is a value judgement that cannot be verified; A and C report verifiable events, and B reports what educators fear.
  • Q4 — C (the adjustment to generative A.I. programs). This sentence comes from a part of the original article not reproduced in the excerpt; "this adjustment" points back to the only adjustment the options mention: adapting to generative A.I.
  • Q5 — A (excluding). Barring = except for / unless there is: "barring some major regulatory intervention" = unless regulation stops them.
  • Q6 — C (argumentative). The author states a position ("banning ChatGPT … is the wrong move") and defends it with a first reason (§4), a second reason (§5–7) and a conclusion (§8).
  • Q7 — B. New York City schools cited "concerns about negative impacts on student learning, and concerns regarding the safety and accuracy of content".
  • Q8 — C. The author argues for using ChatGPT as a teaching tool. The "calculator" rule (B) is only a short-term suggestion for the rest of the year.
  • Q9 — A (ethical concerns … are valid). Legitimate questions = valid concerns. C goes further than the text: it declares the writing unethical, whereas the author only says the questions are justified.
  • Q10 — B. Teachers should adapt: modify lesson plans, use in-class tests, use the tool for outlines and quizzes.
  • Q11 — C. Jon Gold: tools "that let students refine their thinking … practice their ideas". B is false (only six of ten quiz questions were usable); D contradicts the text (it should be paired with class discussion).

Critical reading — Text 2 (E-sports and the Olympics, © The Economist, 2023)

  • Q12 — C. "They were a third lower than in 2008."
  • Q13 — B ("The inclusion of e-sports would boost revenues …"). It is a prediction/judgement by the author (conditional would). A is backed by figures, C reports a claim the IOC actually made, D is a number.
  • Q14 — A (electronic sports). Defined in §2 as "competitive video games".
  • Q15 — D (income generated by e-sports). Revenues = money earned, here from media rights and sponsorship.
  • Q16 — D (problem and solution). Problem: the Games are losing relevance and viewers (§1–2); solution: include e-sports (§2–4); obstacle to the solution (§5).
  • Q17 — C (critical). The writer criticises the IOC ("like an uncool dad", a failed E-sports Week that drew "mockery") and its arguments on violence ("little evidence").
  • Q18 — C (in favour). "The best idea would be to include e-sports"; "The IOC should take its cue from the Asian Games".
  • Q19 — B. The text argues for e-sports for audience, revenue and diversity reasons; A and C are the positions it rejects.
  • Q20 — A (réponse probable). Paragraph 5 says the IOC is hesitant because it associates mainstream video games with violence ("killer games" are taboo), while it has already tested non-violent e-sports (E-sports Week). A summarises both elements (openness + violence concern). C ("has not considered e-sports seriously") is weaker: the IOC did organise an e-sports event.

Language (Q21–Q80)

  • Q21 — D (few / some). "Unfortunately" calls for the negative few (= not many); "find some more" is the natural continuation.
  • Q22 — B (preposition). Onto links "jumped" to "the table" and expresses movement to a surface.
  • Q23 — A (indicating a specific way). With a superlative, the marks the one unique item: "the best way" = the single specific way that is best.
  • Q24 — réponse probable B (Almost all). As printed, none of the options is grammatical: a quantifier followed by of needs a determiner ("almost all of the seagulls"). With "the" restored, B, C and D are all grammatical; B fits the usual scene of gulls following a plough to feed. The item cannot be answered with certainty.
  • Q25 — B (quite a few). "Results" is a countable plural; a good deal of takes uncountables, lots needs of, the number of makes no sense here.
  • Q26 — A (to have done). Claim + perfect infinitive for an action already done: "claims to have done its best".
  • Q27 — réponse probable A. "Give up her seat" is the literal meaning (physically hand over something). B (stop studying) and C (abandon a dream) are figurative; D ("give up his car" = stop using it, as one gives up a habit) is closer to the abandon-a-habit sense. D is also defensible as literal, so the item is ambiguous.
  • Q28 — C (suffering / to continue). Result in + noun/-ing ("result in women suffering"); "too much pain … to continue" = too … to.
  • Q29 — A (Demolishing / selling). A gerund subject ("Demolishing the old hospital would cost …") and consider + -ing.
  • Q30 — A (to have / getting). Persuade someone to do; see something doing for an ongoing process ("see his condition getting worse").
  • Q31 — D (is offered / could be completed). First conditional (real possibility): present in the if-clause, modal + passive infinitive in the main clause. C mixes a past perfect with "would be" (it would need "would have been").
  • Q32 — A (had taken / would feel). Mixed conditional: past condition ("yesterday") → present result ("now").
  • Q33 — B (going). Fancy + -ing.
  • Q34 — B (had worked / would have earned / would be able). Third conditional for the past, then a present consequence ("now you would be able").
  • Q35 — B (didn't have to). Absence of obligation in the past (the narrative is past: "I had attended … last week"). Mustn't = prohibition; may not = possibility/permission.
  • Q36 — A (shall). Shall expresses a legal/regulatory obligation, consistent with penalties for violators; ought to is only advice.
  • Q37 — C (about yourself). After doing everyone else's jobs, "stop and think about yourself" = consider your own needs. "Think for yourself" means form your own opinions, which is not the point here.
  • Q38 — C (either). Either of them = one or the other of two; each/both do not fit "choose", neither contradicts "available".
  • Q39 — C (To / of). Fixed phrases: "to the surprise of …", "the remains of …".
  • Q40 — C (check on the problem). Check on = look at / verify the state of something. "Check up the problem" is wrong (it would be check up on).
  • Q41 — C (for). The usual phrase is "at the moment", which is not offered; of the four options only "for the moment" (= for now) is an existing expression.
  • Q42 — B (on). Feedback on something.
  • Q43 — A (Once). Once = as soon as / after: the procedure continues when the card is obtained.
  • Q44 — B (Now that). It gives a reason linked to the present situation (= since you are now my guest). Although and even if introduce a contrast, which breaks the logic.
  • Q45 — réponse probable B ("The company, which I work for, is expanding."). A is a defining clause (no commas), D is ungrammatical. B is the textbook non-defining clause with which; note that C ("The company, where I work, is expanding") is also grammatically acceptable, which makes the item ambiguous.
  • Q46 — B ("that I read"). The relative clause is introduced by the relative pronoun that and modifies "the book"; D leaves out the relative pronoun.
  • Q47 — réponse probable B. C contains only an adjective phrase ("famous for its friendly staff"), not a clause, so it is the wrong choice. A, B and D all contain correct adjective clauses; B (a defining clause with that, no commas) is the most likely key. The item is ambiguous.
  • Q48 — D (have been done / will have been finished). Present perfect passive with "so far"; future perfect passive with "by Saturday".
  • Q49 — C (Would / follow / went). Second conditional (hypothetical): would + base form / past simple.
  • Q50 — D. It is the only option that actually says no, politely ("I'm afraid … Come some other time"); A, B and C accept.
  • Q51 — D. Independent work, ideas, freedom and love of reading match writing.
  • Q52 — D ("Why don't you join me …?"). Why don't you …? is the standard formula for a suggestion; B is only an opinion.
  • Q53 — D. Strong complaint: intensifier + strong adjectives ("utterly appalled", "deplorable"). A and C are mild; B is unrelated.
  • Q54 — B. It expresses hurt calmly, without threat; A threatens, C and D are irrelevant or intimidating.
  • Q55 — A ("I am highly indebted for your consideration"). It expresses gratitude; D expresses relief, B and C sound presumptuous.
  • Q56 — A. It advises an apology while saying it was not entirely his fault, exactly what the situation asks. D implies he was impolite (blames him); B and C advise against apologising.
  • Q57 — C. A cautious, hedged suggestion ("may improve if you try …"); B reinforces the authoritarian manner, D is categorical.
  • Q58 — B ("I can't say if this film is as good as people claim"). It expresses doubt; A and C express certainty that it is good, D certainty that it is not.
  • Q59 — C (complex sentence). One independent clause ("The book … is on the table") + one dependent relative clause ("that I borrowed …"). A compound sentence needs two independent clauses.
  • Q60 — réponse probable B ("and so does she"). A ("she does too") and B are both correct elliptical forms; C changes the meaning (emphatic "so she does"), D doubles so and too. B is the inverted so + auxiliary + subject structure usually tested.
  • Q61 — réponse probable B (adverbial phrase). The participle phrase "hoping to find …" tells why/in what state she went, so it works adverbially on "went". Some grammars call it a participial phrase modifying the subject; "verb phrase" (D) is not its function.
  • Q62 — C (adverbial phrase). "With a smile" tells how she greeted him (manner).
  • Q63 — B (adjective clause). "That I borrowed from the library" modifies the noun "book".
  • Q64 — A (assertion). Assertiveness = stating one's view firmly and respectfully, without attacking others.
  • Q65 — A (torch).
  • Q66 — A (the issue of states' rights). Historians see slavery as the root cause; of the options given, the dispute over states' rights (above all the right of Southern states to maintain slavery) is the one that fits. "Taxation without representation" (B) is the slogan of the American Revolution (1770s), not of the Civil War.
  • Q67 — B (trick-or-treating).
  • Q68 — D (J.K. Rowling).
  • Q69 — C. To put the cart before the horse = to do things in the wrong order.
  • Q70 — B. To check up (on) = to investigate or verify.
  • Q71 — C. Behind the scenes = out of public view.
  • Q72 — D. To call it a day = to stop working for the day.
  • Q73 — C. To call a spade a spade = to speak frankly, which is what the speaker does about her sister.
  • Q74 — C. "You cannot eat your cake and have it": you cannot have both things at once.
  • Q75 — A (lie). Lie (intransitive: lie down, rest); lay is transitive (lay something) or the past of lie.
  • Q76 — A (principal). Principal (adjective) = main; principle is a noun (a rule or belief).
  • Q77 — réponse probable A (option A reads "cupfuis" on the scan, most likely "cupfuls"). Cupfuls is the standard plural. Some dictionaries also accept cupsful (B); C and D are wrong.
  • Q78 — C (debating / agreement). Debate takes a direct object ("debating the subject"); the collocation is "come to an agreement" (the article an excludes "common point").
  • Q79 — C (either). In negative sentences, "not … either" replaces "too / as well / also".
  • Q80 — B (rather / than). "Rather better than" = somewhat better than; a comparative needs than.

Writing (Q81–Q96)

  • Q81 — A (personal anecdotes). It is the only option that supplies evidence/examples; repetition, vocabulary and transitions do not support an idea.
  • Q82 — B. Body paragraphs persuade with evidence and analysis; summarising is for the conclusion, background for the introduction.
  • Q83 — A. With either … or the verb agrees with the nearer subject: "the waiter has". C should be "is", D "are".
  • Q84 — B. It covers every benefit listed (physical, character, social, academic) in one claim and announces the essay; A and C are partial, D contradicts the introduction.
  • Q85 — C. A concluding sentence restates the main idea; A, B and D contradict the paragraph.
  • Q86 — D (narrative). A personal story in sequence, in the past tense, with a lesson learned.
  • Q87 — B (descriptive). Sensory details (colour, sound, smell) create a picture of a place.
  • Q88 — D (expository). It explains a process objectively, with facts and no argument or story.
  • Q89 — B (repetition). Repeating a key word or structure puts emphasis on a point.
  • Q90 — C (organising extracurricular activities). It is useful in school life but does not directly develop composition skills; A, B and D do.
  • Q91 — B (mastering multimedia in the classroom). It is a teaching tool, not a component of composition; critical thinking, creativity and assessment are central.
  • Q92 — C. Transitions are signal words that organise a paragraph (first, then, however …). A is the topic sentence, B the supporting details, D the definition of a paragraph.
  • Q93 — D. Transition words guide the reader through the shift from benefits to drawbacks.
  • Q94 — C. Smooth transitions between subtopics (data use → surveillance → literacy) create coherence.
  • Q95 — D (conjunctive adverb). "On the other hand" is a conjunctive adverbial that introduces the opposing view.
  • Q96 — C (sequential order). Stages from start (collecting) to finish (new products).

💡 Items to read twice: Q24, Q45, Q47 and Q60 have more than one grammatical option, or none, as printed. In the exam, choose the option that matches the structure the item is clearly testing (non-defining which, adjective clause, so + auxiliary) rather than a second acceptable variant.
